I saw the Friend.ly app come across my newsfeed tonight and while I typically make it a point to ignore all the annoying nonsense (read: apps, quizzes, notes, etc.) circulating around Facebook, this one looked kind of cool. It analyzes your Facebook friends and gives you some quick stats about your connections.

Here’s what I learned about my friend network:

I get along well with Scorpios and Geminis. My friends have really good taste in music, movies, books and tv. I live in NYC where everyone is a workaholic and single. I have a lot of friends named Andrew.

I really can’t stand this:

“Hi, you don’t know me, but add me as a friend on Facebook so I can ‘expand my network.’”

First of all, I am not here to facilitate your networking needs. My Facebook friends are actually that—friends—or at the very least, acquaintances, and I’m not about to whore myself out to some asshole who’s trying to make it as a “social media guru” or some other such bullshit. (Yes, I realize social media is my day job, at least for the time being, but I have never resorted to or endorsed this kind of behavior).

Secondly, I refuse to be friends with someone who still confuses “your” and “you’re.” Inexcusable.

Thirdly, damn you Foursquare. This is all your fault!

Since I no longer have a SXSW panel to hawk....

“I was a 15-year-old kid with a love for punk rock and a desire to get involved; the act of making a fanzine was, as I saw it, both the process and the goal. My first issue was eight pages long, printed in navy blue ink, and totally dreadful. But I printed 200 copies of it, stood outside of CBGB with a backpack full of them, and after peddling them for a few weeks, earned roughly $100 in profit”

I was also a 15-year-old kid with a love for punk rock and a desire to get involved. Instead of starting my own fanzine though, I started writing for someone else’s after emailing the guy to tell him how much his copyediting sucked. That summer, I found myself backstage at Warped Tour with a tape recorder in my sweaty hands, interviewing Davey Havok (from AFI) and Spike (from Me First & The Gimme Gimmes) and the exhilerating feeling that I experienced that day would become the motivating force for the next 7 years of my life. That is, until I actually graduated from college and began applying for magazine jobs only to realize that the industry was no longer a viable career path.

Still, I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving magazines, and fanzines all the more so. I only wish that I could return to that point in my life when I was willing to pour that much energy and enthusiasm into something that I was compensated for in CDs and concert tickets.

I’m finally getting around to reading this post from Joel Johnson about Wired and Wired.com. I want to respond to nearly every single commenter, but I’ll instead just act paralyzed and mention some of the people who show up in the comments: Chris Anderson, Brian Lam, Sean Bonner, Gary Wolf, and Felix Salmon.
